Youngin’s question:Why is the Durham report possibly the most significant document in Canadian history? What made it so significant?
Lord durham’s report was a very significant document because it pointed out what was wrong with the canada’s at the time. It gained peoples attention to what was happening and what needed to happen. Eventhough the report didnt work out in the short term, it ended up leading to a responsible goverment and got rid of the seperate states as well as eventually leading to independece. So without the report the canada’s would have been in turmoil for much longer than it was with all the racism and the awful goverment system it had at the time, there probably
would have been more rebellions and people leaving to settle in the states.

KimYoungin`s question : What were the major differences between Upper and Lower Canada’s rebellion issues? What were the outcomes and was it a positive or a negative result.
Well Youngin, there was one major difference in the issues for Upper and Lower Canada in that in Lower Canada there much more English people than French. The French in Lower Canada were the majority but the government was giving all the rights and privileges to the English and the Anglican church instead of the Catholic church. The French people thought that they were slowly losing their culture and land to the English. That was the major difference between Upper and Lower Canada. The outcomes were that the rebellions failed and rebels were forced to flee. The outcomes of the rebellions can be looked at in a positive and negative way, it could be positive if you were part of that oligarchy and you wanted to maintain control, but it was obviously a negative outcome for the rebels because they weren’t able to overthrow the government. But they were able to open everyone’s eyes to the corrupt government and change did come eventually, which was a positive result.

Just as in blog #3 - post a question and then a response to a different question on the rebellions of 1837/1838 - you can either use the presentations from class on Friday or check out the following website looking specifically at ISSUES, SUMMARY and AFTERMATH. http://www.edunetconnect.com/cat/rebellions/. Remember these questions might be something you have trouble understanding or a main point that you feel is important to know.
Who were the two groups in the Canadas that were both a major cause to the rebellions? Why were they a major cause? What were they doing that made the people so angry with them?

Eli Bah`s question:
What was the Pemmican Proclamation? Who issued it? What was it trying to accomplish? Who did it affect and how did it affect?
The Pemmican Proclamation was a proclamation that didn’t allow any pemmican to leave the Red River settlement. It was ordered in 1814 by Miles Macdonnell because there was a lack of food at the settlement and many colonists were starving; they needed the food and pemmican was the perfect answer. It affected the nor`westers and the metis because they now couldn’t supply food to their traders and their people. It also did affect the colonists because the metis and the nor`westers retaliated due to the proclamation and harassed the colonists by burning down homes, barns, and trampling their crops.

Why was the North West Company eventually forced to sell and merge with the Hudson’s Bay Company?

1. Why is it the forgotten war?
2. Why is it important to Canada?
1. It was forgotten because it was a small war and the war in Europe with Napoleon was a much bigger issue and the last thing people worried about was a small war in the colonies. For the United States the War of 1812 was a small war with very little causalities in between two big more significant wars that’s why it isn’t payed attention to as much.
2. It was important to Canada because it was the war where Canada defended its freedom, rights and its democracy.

Also, immigration disrupted the native presence in BNA. All the immigrants and settlers increasing the population made the natives become a lesser minority. The native populations decreased because of disease and expansion because of all the new immigrants.

Immigrations disrupted British North America because people from many different places came to settle and they all had a different opinions than the original settlers and the other immigrants so that led to creation of new provinces/colonies and conflict between each other. The population increase also disrupted the way the population was divided among the colonies, this led to a messed up economy and settlers having to share their jobs.
